The Wiccan Rede is just a bit of advice. LOTS of people “follow” it, not only Wicca. It is very closely related to the Hippocratic oath, which all doctors are supposed to observe. It is a guideline for ethical behavior, nothing more and nothing less.
I often like to get my students started on a discussion of the Rede with this article:http://proteuscoven.com/rede.htm . Then we talk about Will, and what that is. We talk A LOT about harm, and what that is, and isn’t. We talk about personal responsibility and cleaning up your own messes and the fact that at some point in his or her magical career, every Witch makes a big fat goof.
No one is really bound by the Rede. It’s not a commandment, it’s not an oath (on its own), or a law of nature. It’s an ethical guideline.
You can’t go through life without harming anyone so I think you should try your best, try your hardest 🙂
