The answers so far are very fine, and actually illustrate very well one of the misconceptions I often find:
All Wiccans take themselves very seriously.
Yeah, not all of us. We are a varied bunch, and my Tradition especially is prone to fits of giggles mid-ritual. (Yes, even in the Big Important Ones.) When people mock my religion, I generally shrug and agree that, yes, we are very silly. Now, I do take the silliness very seriously. It is mandated by the gods! “All acts of love and pleasure are rituals.” Well, I get a heck of a lot of pleasure out of a good belly laugh at no one’s expense!
Another common one is:
All Wiccans are into New Agey WooWoo stuff.
I’m not very credulous, and neither are msot of the Witches in my coven. I’ll TRY a crystal grid and herbal tea for my headache, but not before I pop a couple of good old Western Medicine Bayer aspirin. I’ve studied Astrology and find it interesting, but do I really think that being born on one day vs. another changes your Wierd? Not really. Not until society programs that stuff into you. I follow the axiom “Keep your mind open, but not so open that your brain falls out.”
